Lasell’s Joshua Kummins ‘17 is knocking it out of the park with a record number of sports writing positions, one year into college. Kummins is a Communication major with a Sports Journalism concentration.

For the past year, he has served as a contributing writer for Seamans Media and Mill City Sports. Publications include the New England Baseball Journal, the New England Hockey and New York Hockey journals. During the summer of 2014, Kummins also served as a beat writer for the Cape Cod Baseball and the Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Assignments included attending games and conducting pregame interviews with players and coaches for feature stories which ran in each month's issues.

“For the month of July, I wrote features on ‘Players to Watch on the Cape and in the Futures League,’” Joshua said. “Among my subjects was Michael Murray who is pitching for the Cape League's Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox after going 13-1 this spring at Florida Gulf Coast University.”

One assignment for the sophomore took him to Fenway Park where the Cape League held its annual Scout Day. There, Joshua had the opportunity to interview several athletes about their experiences playing in America's Most Beloved Ballpark.

“I interviewed Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino who just so happened to make a rehab appearance,” Joshua said. “I also talked with new Sox prospect Kevin McAvoy for the monthly NEBJ ‘Hangin' Out’ Q&A segment.”

The article, ‘Fenway Fun Day,’ was featured in the August edition of NEBJ.

A separate assignment at Fenway was covering the Lowell Spinners appearance in the annual ‘Futures at Fenway’ game.

“(I) never thought I'd get to do all of this at such a young age, but it's been so much fun,” Joshua said.

During his time at Lasell, the former Malden High graduate has been a dean’s scholar and a Lasell College Achievement Award Recipient.
