Janice M. Barrettbarrett, Ed.D.
Associate Professor, Communication

Dr. Janice Barrett holds numerous degrees and experience in higher education administration and teaching. Dr. Barrett holds an Ed.D and a M.Ed. in Administration, Planning, and Social Policy from Harvard University, a M.S. in Mass Communication from Boston University, and a B.S. in English/Education from Boston College. Having served as both communication faculty and in varied administration positions at several colleges around the nation and abroad, including Boston University, Quinnipiac University, Harvard University and as a Fulbright Scholar at Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland, Dr. Barrett has extensive experience educating graduate students and managing programs in higher education. Most recently, Dr. Barrett was Associate Dean of Communications at Quinnipiac University, where her responsibilities included academic advising, curriculum, policy and program development, among others. Dr Barrett, who will be teaching Conflict Resolution and Negotiation, Crisis Communications, and Media Relations in the graduate program, serves as a highly respected and knowledgeable faculty person in the field.

Linda Bruenjes, M.S.B.Ed., Ed.D

Linda Bruenjes' research centers upon the application of an inquiry-based curriculum focused on social issues, merged with an applied approach to the knowledge acquisition of digital communication tools.

She served as the Joan Weiler Arnow Professor at Lasell College from 2002 through 2004. Professor Bruenjes has recently co-authored the chapter on Internet2 for the Handbook of Computer Networks. Most recently she has been studying how technology can assist faculty to meet course objectives while providing students with the skills needed to become confident in their ability to compete in a hi-tech environment.

Linda Bruenjes currently serves as a member of the Parent/Advisory Committee at Northeastern University and Secretary of the Sandy Point Sailing Program in Beverly, Massachusetts. Linda Bruenjes writes: "Education is not just a profession to me -- it is a lifelong pursuit. I strongly believe in Mahatma Ghandi's suggestion that one should "Live as if you were to die tomorrow, Learn as if you were to live forever."

Jennifer L. Chakroff, Ph.D
Assistant Professor, Communication

Jennifer Chakroff's teaching and research interests involve the social and psychological effects of the mass media. More specifically, her research lies at the intersection of mass media and interpersonal communication. In particular, she is interested in the effectiveness of active mediation strategies, which aim to reduce the unintended effects of advertising and television violence on children at different
developmental levels.

Jennifer's work appears in the Journal of Communication, the Blackwell Handbook of Child Development and Media, and the Handbook of Research on Computer Mediated Communication. In addition, she has presented multiple papers at the annual meetings of the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association.

Prior to starting at Lasell College, Jennifer was awarded the International Communication Association's Graduate Student Teaching Award of Excellence. She firmly believes that teaching is a chance to help students reach their personal and professional goals. By continuing to find new ways to adapt to students' learning styles, Jennifer helps them apply what they learn in the classroom to what they experience outside of it. Jennifer, will be teaching Persuasion and Public Opinion in the graduate program.

Kara Curtis, MPA
Adjunct Lecturer, Elder Care 

With over ten years of Health Care Management and Policy Development experience, Kara Curtis is an asset to the Elder Care program at Lasell. She is currently the Senior Director of Government Relations and Business Development at Network Health, a Medicaid managed care organization. Her professional background includes working at the Department of Health Policy and Finance where she worked closely with state's Medicaid program to develop Senior Care Plan. She also spent seven years working for Tufts Health Plan in supporting the plan's Medicare Advantage program.  She holds her Master’s of Public Administration in Health Policy from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Arts and Sciences from Pennsylvania State University .

Lynn Edwardsed, Ph.D., MBA
Adjunct Lecturer, Business

With a breadth of knowledge, education, and experience in business management, accounting, marketing, and statistics, Dr. Lynn Edwards will serve the graduate program exceptionally well. Dr. Edwards holds a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Wyoming, an M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a B.S. in Accounting from St. Cloud State University. She is also a Certified Public Accountant. She is currently the Founding Partner of Market Innovations, Inc., a general management consulting firm that focuses on linking quantitative insights with marketing strategy. Previous to this, Dr. Edwards has worked as an accounting teacher and a district accounting manager.

Richard Fredricks, MA
Associate Professor, Accounting
Department Chair, Accounting and Finance

An accomplished practitioner in the world of accounting and finance, Richard Fredericks has worked as: Vice President and Director of Internal Auditing for Multibank Financial Corporation, Audit Director for Bank Boston, Fund Manager at The Boston Company, and CPA at Coopers & Lybrand. He graduated with highest honors from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking and earned his Master of Science in Accounting from Bentley College. He is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner.

Raymond Guillette, Ed.D., MBA
Adjunct Lecturer, Business

Raymond Guillette comes to Lasell with a strong background in higher education administration and classroom teaching, as well as hands on industry experience. Having worked in higher education administration at the director level at several colleges and universities, as well as an adjunct faculty member at several area colleges for over 15 years, Raymond brings an expansive wealth of knowledge and wisdom to Lasell. Raymond has also worked as a practitioner when he was the President/Owner of Patriot Electronics. Raymond is an Ed.D candidate in Higher Education and Leadership and holds an MBA from Anna Maria College and a BA from Bridgewater State College.

Emily Meyer, Ph.D.
Adjunct Lecturer, Elder Care

Dr. Meyer brings to Lasell a distinguished and impressive history of social work, public policy, and project management experience in a variety of industries. She currently works for the Massachusetts Assisted Living Facilities Association as Executive Director, and has held positions at Vinfen Corporation, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Massachusetts. She has served on advisory boards including the State Government Advisory Board on Assisted Living, and the State Government Small Business Advisory Board. She holds her Ph.D. in Social Welfare Policy from Brandies University, a M.S.W. from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. in Social Psychology from the Goddard Graduate School and a B.A. is Sociology and Psychology from Boston University.

Lori Rosenthal, M.S., Ph.D.ros
Assistant Professor, Psychology

Lori Rosenthal's scholarly work reflects her interest in applications of psychology to organizational and consumer behavior. Her work explores the psychology of attitudes and persuasion specifically as it relates to communication and health marketing and behavior. Professor Rosenthal has investigated the impact of personality traits and emotional experiences on an individual's motivation to process persuasive health messages, the effect of motivational orientation in the reception of promotional materials such as contingent valuation questionnaires and website content, the impact of fear-arousing persuasive communications on health attitudes and behaviors, and the role of gender in influencing the creation and perception of emotionally charged persuasive interpersonal communications in the workplace. Most recently, she has been investigating the purpose and persuasiveness of pro-anorexia websites. Her research has been published in The Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Journal of Freedom of Expression, The Journal of Environmental and Economic Management, and A Reason to Hope: A Psychosocial Perspective on Violence and Youth. Professor Rosenthal's work has also been presented at numerous national and international conferences sponsored by The American Psychological Association, The Eastern Psychological Association, and the National Communication Association.

Lori Rosenthal comes to Lasell from Emerson College where she was a full-time faculty member in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies. While at Emerson, she received that college's highest award for faculty members, the Mann-Stearns Distinguished Faculty Award. She is also the President of the Friends of the Sharon Public Library.

Lori Rosenthal has received numerous awards for her teaching including the Social Psychology Network's Action Teaching Award and two Instructional Resource Awards from the American Psychological Association. She believes that students learn most when they are actively engaged with the course material; thus, she incorporates experiential activities such as service-learning and application-based assignments. She says, "My favorite portion of every class is when students "catch" my enthusiasm, when a particular example, theory, or hypothesis leads them to wonder . . . when a class discussion leads to that "Ah-ha" moment and their eyes' light up as they gain insight into how psychology relates to their own lives."

Derrek L. Shulman, MA
Lecturer, Elder Care

Derrek Shulman from 1995 to 2003 was responsible for communications and government relations in the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs. As Chief of Staff at Elder Affairs, Derrek was the Cabinet office's primary liaison to the Governor, legislature, media, and statewide senior community. Derrek's marketing campaigns have helped to redefine agency identity and launch program initiatives that led to his selection as part of the team that earned the 2001 Governor's Award for Excellence. Derrek also led the annual Governor's Conference on Aging and directed the marketing plan that introduced the nation's first state-sponsored prescription drug insurance program. Before joining Elder Affairs, Derrek specialized in media and legislative research in the Massachusetts State Senate and before that he was a reporter/columnist for a daily newspaper in Massachusetts. Since 2003 Derrek has worked as the New England Political Director for a national lobby. He holds a B.A. degree in history from Clark University and a M.A. degree in American Studies from the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Dr. Waldron holds her Ph.D. in organization and management from Capella University in Minneapolis and her MBA from Plymouth State College. In addition to extensive experience as a professor, she worked as financial/administrative controller for an international, multi-million dollar fleece-wear company that partnered with Malden Mills, as general manager of a security firm, and in finance for Boston Trade Bank and United States Trust Company.

Martin Walsh, Ph.D., MBA walsh
Assistant Professor of Business
Director of MSM Capstone Program

Dr. Walsh has dedicated his life to education and has an impressive career with over 24 years of teaching experience. Awarded the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year award in 1990, and the Northeastern University College Award for Teaching Excellence in 1992, Martin brings excellent credentials to Lasell. He also was a member of the Peace Corps from 1968 to 1970 in Nepal and has dedicated himself to academic and public service for the Dedham School system, the Boston Drama Group and Northeastern University. Martin holds a Ph.D. in International Investment Policy and an MA in History from Northeastern University, a MBA in Executive Management from Anna Maria College and a BA from Calvin Coolidge College.

Catherine Zeek's scholarly interests focus on supporting educators as they develop habits of skilled teaching and critical reflection. In collaboration with a colleague, she developed transactional inquiry, a process through which educators read and respond to their own and others' narratives of effective practice, identifying applications to their own teaching. She presents regularly at conferences including American Educational Research Association, National Reading Conference, and American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. Her articles appear in Journal of Teacher Education, Reading Research and Instruction, and research yearbooks of National Reading Conference, College Reading Association, and Association of Teacher Educators.

Prior to joining the Education Department in 2005, Professor Zeek chaired the Reading Department at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas; before that, she taught at Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas. Her classroom experience includes teaching second and first graders and leading writing workshops for all elementary grades. She has held leadership roles in Rotary International, Phi Delta Kappa, and several school district committees related to literacy.

Catherine Zeek believes that effective teachers communicate the excitement of learning, challenging learners to push the boundaries of their thinking and skills, develop deep understanding of content, and translate their knowledge to new situations. She summarizes her approach to education by paraphrasing William Wordsworth: Others will love what we have loved. We will teach them how.
