2008 Season Review
First year Head Coach Marushka Eddy and her squad posted a 7-11 overall record and 2-5 record in the North Atlantic Conference, in the 2008 season. The Lasers made an appearance in the quarter finals of the NAC field hockey tournament, but unfortunately they came up short, dropping the game to Husson College, to end their season.
The Lasers were led by junior captain Caitlyn Walker (Middlebury, CT). Walker posted a total of 43 points, which included 20 goals and 3 assists this season. One of highlights of the season was brought about by Walker in a 9-2 win over Elms College, when she set the college record for goals scored in a game (6) against the Blazers. Walker was selected to the NAC All-Conference second team for her distinguished play this season.
Joining Walker on the second team of the NAC All-Conference selections is sophomore Tia Pratt (South Paris, ME). Playing as a midfielder, Pratt has great speed and athletic ability that gave her an edge over her competition. Pratt finished this season with 13 points, on four goals and five assists.
Other Lasers making their mark this season include junior Meagan DeAndrade (New Bedford, MA), senior Stephanie Jansen (Glen, NH), and freshman Christine Thornton (Canton, MA). DeAndrade was second on the team in total points, with 18, and was chosen as an honorable mention to the All-Conference team by the NAC for the 2008 season. Jansen, a midfielder and co-captain, was next in points with 14 total, on five goals and four assists.
Rookie Thornton, filled the role of goalkeeper with distinction for Lasell this season. She had a 3.26 goals against average and a .744 save percentage. Thornton is ranked 32nd in the NCAA DIII Field Hockey national statistics in saves per game, averaging 8.73 saves per game. With a year of experience under her belt, Thornton will only get better in the years to come.
Lasell will graduate 3 players from their 2008 roster. Cara Hulse (Danbury, CT) and Amanda Miller (Fall River, MA) will be joining Jansen on the graduation stage in May. Hulse was a leading defender for Lasell, collecting 5 defensive saves in 15 games. Hulse finished 3rd in the NAC in total defensive saves, and averaged .33 per game. Miller played 6 games in net for the Lasers this season and picked up 35 saves. All three had great careers and were key contributors throughout their time at Lasell.
Other key players to the Lasers offense this season were forwards Hannah Cebry (Burlington, CT) and Amy Lentini (Wilmington, MA) who collected 7 points each for Lasell, and Justine McComb (Bloomfield, CT) and Kasey Looney (Leicester, MA) who had 5 and 4 points correspondingly.
Showing experience and skill in the midfield and on defense were Kelsey Brooks (Dartmouth, MA), Tiffany Potter (Rochdale, MA), Kristin Moran (Bedford, NH), Sara Jannuzzi (Glen, NH), Ainsley Wolfe (Derry, NH), and Amanda Gorski (Wethersfield, CT). Wolfe picked up two defensive saves this season, while Jannuzzi pulled out one defensive save, as well as an assist on the year.
The future looks very bright for the Lasers, who will be 9 of 11 starters returning, as well as a very deep bench.
