The Lasers women’s soccer team shows high hopes for the future after a very positive 2008 season. This young crew played with composure and drive all season, posting a 10-6-2 record and 7-3-2 record in the GNAC, which earned them a spot in the post-season tournament. Lasell was defeated by Emmanuel, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the GNAC Tournament, however, the Lasers continued their season by earning a berth as the eighth seed in the ECAC Championship Tournament for the first time in the program’s history.
Lasell’s 2008 season ended in the quarter finals of the 2008 DIII ECAC New England Championships against the no. 1 team, Keene State College.
Lasell will only be losing 2 senior athletes from the 2008 group, Ashlinn O’Brien (Ware, MA) and Jamie Remmers (West Islip, NY). Remmers played a huge part in the team’s success between the pipes. In 10 games she posted a .867 save percentage. Remmers posted 3 solo shut outs this season against Mount Ida (1 save), Rivier (4 saves), and Lesley University (9 saves), along with three combined shut outs with rookie goalkeeper Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, Mass.) against Albertus Magnus, Wheelock, and Suffolk.
Stickley was superb all year in net and led the team in saves with 89 total and averaging a .848 save percentage. Stickley recorded her first collegiate shutout this season against New England College, in which she tallied 5 saves. The GNAC recognized Stickley’s performance this season and selected her as a second team All Conference recipient. Through the end of the regular season, Stickley was statistically ranked 15th in the nation in NCAA Division III in save percentage (.890).
Two Lasell defenders and one midfielder were also chosen to the GNAC All-Conference teams. Junior captain Alaina Mitrano (Medford, Mass.) and freshman Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) were first team recipients, and freshman Jordynn Frollo (Uxbridge, Mass.) was a third team honoree.
Mitrano and Frollo were leading defenders all season long for the Lasers, while also producing opportunities for Lasell’s offensive attack. Mitrano finished the season averaging .36 assist per game (ranked 7th in the GNAC), while Frollo lead in total assists for the Lasers with six.
Hessler ended her first year as a Laser tied with Liz McGeoy (Doylestown, PA) for second in total points on the team, with 13 total points for Lasell, each scoring on six goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Alyssa Ferreri (Southbury, CT) was first on the team in points, scoring 14 overall, and scored 4 game winning goals this season, three of those against conference opponents.
Lasell’s fourth leading scorer, Allyson Bushey (Westminster, Mass.), and offensive threats Olivia Tsakaris (Grosvenordale, Conn.), Alexi Giatrelis (Mashpee, Mass.) and Ashley Lambert (Salem, Mass.) all brought speed and experience to the team. Bushey contributed 5 goals and two assists this year, and Tsakaris, Giatrelis and Lambert combined for 15 points.
Kaitlyn Fields (Stoneham, Mass.) scored twice this season, including the game winning goal against Johnson & Wales University, in a double overtime sudden death contest, with 28 second left to play. The win over Johnson & Wales gave secured a sixth place finish for the Lasers in the conference.
