Communications Majors Assist at NBC’s Today Show during its Boston Visit

February 15, 2013

When NBC's Today Show took over Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall in Boston Friday in a special version of the popular morning television program, two Lasell communications majors were on hand to help out. Ryan McFadden, a freshman from Mendon, Mass., and Tim Doherty, a junior from Chelmsford, Mass., served as assistants for the program.

"They did an amazing job; I am so proud of them," said Lasell Communications Professor Michael Burns, who was contacted by Today Show producers earlier in the week to assist. Before coming to Lasell, Burns worked for the Today Show covering the 2006 Torino, 2008 Beijing, and 2012 London Olympic Games.

The Lasell students served in a variety of roles during Friday's show, escorting show guests the band the Dropkick Murphy's and Mindy Kaling, star and writer of The Mindy Project on Fox TV and former star of NBC's The Office from the hotel, setting up the cooking segment and acting as crowd control. The students also met show hosts Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie.

"Most importantly they got to see how a live news broadcast works and saw the largest news operation in the business in action," said Burns.
