Lasell College Food Service Assists Newton Food Pantry

January 17, 2013

Since December, volunteers from Lasell's Food Service vendor Sodexo have transported food items to the Centre Street Food Pantry in Newton - helping the organization provide much needed supplies to local residents.

Managers at the Lasell food service operation take turns each Tuesday delivering a weekly food donation from the Greater Boston Food Bank to the local shelter. The Greater Boston Food Bank is one of the food pantry's on-going partners. Previously, volunteers at the pantry had to drive their own vehicles to Boston.

"We have a goal of community outreach, plus community involvement is part of the fabric at Lasell," said Mairead Van Heest, General Manager for Sodexo at Lasell.

According to Christine Hubbard, Operations Manager for Sodexo at Lasell, the volunteers at the pantry had a need and Sodexo had a van available on Tuesdays.

"It was a joint moment when we said ‘Let's work it out,'" she said.

The pantry, which is located at 11 Homer Street in Newton serves families from Newton as well as surrounding towns including Watertown, Waltham, Allston/Brighton and others. Families can visit the pantry once per month.

More information is available at the pantry's website www.centrestfoodpantry.org
