Mohegan Sun Gaming CEO Discusses Casino’s Brand, Massachusetts Plans

April 17, 2014

Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Sun Tribal Gaming Authority, whose company is vying for a casino license in Massachusetts, spoke to the Lasell community this week about the process and plans for a new facility near Suffolk Downs.

Etess told a group of Lasell students and other members of the community that Mohegan Sun would bring its guest and family-oriented culture to the Revere, Mass. site, creating 4,000 new jobs and saving jobs at Suffolk Downs race track. He spoke at Yamawaki Auditorium on April 17.

"The Massachusetts proposal is on the land of Suffolk Downs. It will be reflective of the beach and history of gaming in Revere. There are generations of people who have worked in the industry," Etess said.

Etess also described several other casino facilities owned by Mohegan Sun and the flagship property in Connecticut, which hosts a performance arena and a WNBA basketball team.

"We are the highest grossing casino in the Western Hemisphere-- even Las Vegas," he said.

In a question and answer session, Etess spoke to students about his own path into the casino industry - his family owned a resort in the New York Catskills - and his philosophy about hiring new employees.

"To be successful you need talented people," said Etess, who added that he looks for bright, capable people first - experience second.

He also said that his company hopes to form relationships with local colleges, if the Massachusetts proposal is successful.
