A year ago, President Michael B. Alexander took a vacation and let his beard grow. But, when he returned to campus, instead of going back to the clean-shaven look, he decided to keep the beard.

A running joke developed between him and Lasell alum and long-time benefactor Adelaide Van Winkle '36, who wanted the facial hair to disappear. President Alexander, half-joking, said he could make it go away --- for a price!

Who knew that Adelaide would agree to pay for the beard's demise! Well, sort of...
