Three Lasell Students Compete in BSO’s Project Debussy

January 23, 2012

Three Lasell fashion students have been chosen as finalists in the Boston Symphony Orchestra's annual fashion design contest -- named Project Debussy this year -- inspired by the composer Claude Debussy. Eleven finalists, including those from Lasell, were chosen from fashion design programs in the Boston area to compete on February 2 at a special event at the BSO.

The three Lasell students, Meghan Coffman '13, Amanda Erickson '12, and Lindsay Holcomb '12 were asked to create evening wear that synthesizes Debussy's musical legacy and each designer's aesthetic creativity.

On Thursday, February 2, prior to that evening's BSO concert, finalists will present their creations to patrons who can vote for their favorite. The overall winner will be selected by guest judges at a complimentary post-concert reception that evening.

Coffman, of Brigantine, N.J., said of her design, "The light blue color is meant to represent how calming and relaxing his music is. Along with this, the black lace is not only meant to emphasize the changes that occur in the music, but also how elegant and intricate Debussy's works are."

Erickson, of Londonderry, N.H., said of her creation, ""I was attracted to these pieces because Debussy used darker passages that were not found as often in his other musical compositions. I envisioned these dark, proper, structured tones as black and gold."

"When I was listening to Debussy's Nocturnes I: Nuages I noticed that it is both light, but with a sense of menace, like having hope when you know it's false, like a trapped butterfly," said Holcomb, of Oakville, Conn.

In previous years Lasell fashion students have participated in the BSO's Project Mozart, Project Beethoven and Project Tchaikovsky.
