When choosing between two qualified candidates, employers tend to select the person who has experience, especially with completed internships (NACE 2020 Job Outlook). Most Lasell students complete more than one internship, ensuring that they gain valuable skills and are career-ready upon graduation.

What is an Internship?

Internships at Lasell:

• Typically relate to your academic major and directly relate to Lasell University’s philosophy of Connected Learning
  
  
• Combine classroom theory with a structured, supervised work experience, providing the opportunity to link academic experience with future career aspirations or community service objectives
  
  
• Enhance personal, professional, and educational development, bridging the gap between the classroom and the "real world"

Internship Coordinators from academic departments will advise you, review learning objectives, and provide evaluations of your performance. You will also have site supervisors who work with you to meet specific learning outcomes. For-credit internship requirements are listed in the academic catalog.

Benefits of Internships

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers rate internships and other experiential learning experiences as the most important qualifications a candidate can have. Having a great GPA and campus involvement is also important; employers want to see evidence of how you have applied your knowledge and skills in a real-world setting.  

Internships provide on-the-job experience that gives you an edge over other applicants. Internships can help you to:  

• Learn about a career field from the inside and decide if this is the right career field for you  
• Observe the workplace and see if it matches expectations 
• Develop leadership skills 
• Practice communication and teamwork skills 
• Network, develop professional connections, and establish mentors  
• Create an advantage over other job or graduate school applicants 
• Increase the chances for a full-time job offer at the end of the internship (this varies by employer) 

Summer Internship Funding and Application

Lasell University and the Board of Trustees offer $3,000 stipends for select students who accept unpaid full-time internships that will provide an exceptional learning opportunity.
