Remembering Charlotte Lindgren Winslow
Shortly before her death at age 98, Charlotte Lindgren Winslow was in the art studio at Lasell Village finishing a watercolor painting commissioned by actor Henry Winkler, her longtime friend.
They met decades ago when Winslow was an English professor at Emerson College in Boston and Winkler was her student. Upon learning of her death, the actor best known as “The Fonz” in the 1970s and ’80s hit show “Happy Days” tweeted: “My beloved English professor passed away. Rest n peace, Dr. Charlotte Lindgren. She taught with the same grace with which she lived.”
Such was the fascinating life of Charlotte Winslow, a Lasell Village resident, generous University supporter, and co-founder of the Winslow Archives at Brennan Library. An accomplished professor of British literature, world traveler, history buff, artist, and creator of small, knitted animals, she was, above all, known as a kind and gentle woman. She died on November 26, 2022.
“Charlotte was a beloved and loving member of our community who embodied the ideal of a lifelong learner,” President Michael B. Alexander said. “We are so thankful that Charlotte and her husband, Donald, funded the establishment of the Winslow Archives so we can share the vibrant history of Lasell with our community and others.”
Winslow met her husband, fellow English professor Donald Winslow, at Boston University. Donald was born in Karandon House and raised on the Lasell campus. His father, Guy M. Winslow, served as Lasell’s president from 1908 to 1947.
Anne Doyle, a close friend who was president of Lasell Village for seven years, visited Charlotte days before her death while she was working on the Winkler painting. She found her upbeat, chatting with friends as she worked, and, as always, dressed impeccably.
“Charlotte said ‘yes’ to all that life offered,” Doyle said. “She was exceptional in every way, and I feel so lucky to have had our close friendship. She was truly inspirational.”
