Remembering Stan Buchin

Stan, a beloved member of the faculty at Lasell’s Longe School of Business and a resident of Lasell Village, died on July 23 at the age of 92.

A businessman and consultant, he taught at Harvard University, Oxford University, the University of Paris, Boston University, and, finally, at Lasell as an adjunct lecturer.

“Stan was an esteemed academic with a deep passion for lifelong learning who continued to teach courses in AI and hospitality at 92 years young,” Professor Matthew Reilly ’06 G’09 said. “His commitment to education and contribution to the scholarly world can only be matched by his dedication to and support of his family and friends.”

Said Lucas Chartier ’15, “Professorw Buchin always used his sense of humor to connect with his students, and his was one class that I would always be excited to attend at 8 a.m.!” Adam Davenport ’24, who co-taught seminars on AI with Stan at the Village, adds that despite their 68-year age difference and varied worldviews, “we worked seamlessly together. Teaching with Stan was an experience I deeply cherish.”

Remembering Gloria Boyd Major-Brown '44

Gloria, an active alumna and generous donor to Lasell, died on July 22 at the age of 100 in Santa Barbara, California.

Because of her positive experiences as a student, she made annual gifts to the Lasell Fund and other initiatives. She was also a member of the Heritage Society for including Lasell in her estate plans.

“The faculty and staff were so good to me when I was at Lasell,” she said in a recent profile in Leaves. “I could have gone in a different direction. They were a real influence in my life.”

She grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, in a family that emphasized volunteering. While raising her own family in New Jersey and Connecticut, she started church groups for children and volunteered at the local YMCA. She also helped launch a nonprofit that supports independent living for the elderly.

Remembering Antoinette “Atch” Ruinen Stapper ’56

Antoinette, a generous supporter of Lasell along with her husband, Erik, passed away on May 26 at Lasell House, the skilled nursing facility at Lasell Village.

As a student, Atch was active with Orphean and the Philosophy Club and graduated with an associate’s degree in health care administration. During her time at Lasell, she went on a double date with Erik Stapper, who graduated from Harvard in 1957. The couple were married in 1960. They lived for many years in New York City, first in Brooklyn and then for 57 years in midtown Manhattan. Atch worked as a paralegal at Erik’s law firm, Stapper & Van Doren.

At her 40th Lasell Reunion in 1996, Atch and Erik learned about plans for Lasell Village. They became part-time residents in 2000 and moved in full time in 2020.

Because of Atch and Erik’s experiences overseas and interest in international travel, they established the Mary McNamara ’56 and Antoinette Ruinen ’56 Scholarship Fund for International  Students or Studies at Lasell in 1996 in acknowledgement of the decades-long friendship between Atch and Mary. They also generously supported Lasell’s Shoulder to Shoulder international service-learning programs, Bridge to the Future campaign, In Pursuit of Great campaign, and the Michael B. Alexander Presidential Scholarship.
