Biography:
Dr. Neil Hatem's scholarly interests center on mathematics. On his sabbatical in 2018, he volunteered at Lowell, Revere, and Waltham High Schools to improve students' SAT/ACT scores. He noticed that many of the students did not have their own calculators, and raised over $6,000 to provide them with one. His efforts were featured in the Boston Globe, Newton Tab, and on WCVB Channel 5 News.
Dr. Hatem is actively involved in leadership and philanthropy activities at the University, including relief work in New Orleans to aid in Hurricane Katrina clean-up efforts. He has served as chair of the faculty assembly, assistant coach of the women's basketball team, Connected Learning organizer, chair of the professional development committee, and most recently as vice chair and treasurer of the faculty assembly. In 2021, Dr. Hatem was the recipient of the Thomas E.J. de Witt Award for Excellence in Educational Leadership. He was also the 2008 recipient of the Lasell SGA de Witt Spirit Award, and received the 2011 Lamp yearbook dedication.
He completed his EdD at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in 2010, with research focused on the effect that graphic calculators have on college math students' achievements.
In his spare time, Dr. Hatem enjoys jogging and playing basketball. He has run the Boston Marathon eight times, and raised nearly $10,000 for Lasell's Dennis "DJ" Simmonds '08 Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2015. Dr. Hatem also completed the Lake Placid Ironman in 2013.
What do you like about teaching at Lasell University?
"I like to see the smile on students' faces when they solve a problem and realize they can do math. In addition, working with Lasell's honor students on various philanthropic journeys has given me a satisfaction I cannot describe in words. Lasell is a great community, from students to faculty to the administration, and that is why I chose Lasell!"
