Biography:
Steven F. Bloom's primary scholarly focus is on the life and works of the American dramatist Eugene O'Neill, in particular, O'Neill's dramaturgical use of drinking and alcoholism. More broadly, he has also focused on the depiction of the family in O’Neill and on the American stage and screen. He is the editor of Critical Insights: Eugene O’Neill, published in 2013 by EBSCO/Salem Press, and the author of The Student Companion to Eugene O'Neill, published in 2007 by Greenwood Press. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Eugene O'Neill Society, having served on the Board since 2000; he was the Society’s President from 2006 to 2007. Professor Bloom was the Book Reviews Editor of “The Eugene O'Neill Review” from 1988 until 2004, and he has published numerous articles and reviews on O'Neill in “The Eugene O'Neill Review” and elsewhere, most recently contributing an essay on O’Neill to The Oxford Handbook of American Drama (2014). He has spoken on O'Neill's drama, as well as the works of other dramatists at many professional conferences and other public forums, including the Humanities Forum at the Huntington Theatre Company in Boston.

Before coming to Lasell, Professor Bloom taught at Emmanuel College in Boston for nineteen years, and was Chair of the English Department at Emmanuel for 10 years. He received his Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Brandeis University, and his Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Rochester. He also attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York City, where he studied drama and theatre.

As Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Undergraduate Education at Lasell, Professor Bloom manages many facets of Academic Affairs and is particularly responsible for curriculum development, the Core Curriculum, assessment of academic programs, and new program development. He has served on the Board of Directors of the New England Educational Assessment Network (NEEAN) since 2009 and begins a term as Vice President in 2015. As a teacher and administrator, he is committed to inspiring students with a love of lifelong learning.
