1940s

1940
Three members of the Class of 1940 celebrated 103rd birthdays in the first half of 2024: Dottie Ulrich Eagleson on January 16, Pauline DiTullio Monaco on March 27, and Barbara Donohue Cain on April 11.

Joan Hanson Blake

1950s

1953
Class Secretary | Mary Ann Donahue

Dorothy Brinkman sang in a recent concert with the Martin Luther King Community Choir. She recalls Dot Bardarson once attending a performance. She writes, “I’ve been with them for 25 years. It’s a great group with a fabulous director.”

Mary Anne Donahue attended Lasell’s gathering at the New York Athletic Club in January and enjoyed speaking with President Eric Turner and his wife, Wanda. She writes, “NYC is full of 2024 political action. There is always something new. I’m glad to be here.” She is looking forward to more summer lunches with Shirley Vara Gallerani and anyone in the Cape Cod area who would like to join them.

Shirley Vara Gallerani and Mary Ann Donahue get together on Cape Cod each summer for theater outings and lunch or dinner. They enjoy catching up during their drives together to Lasell for Board of Overseers meetings. One of Shirley’s granddaughters was married on New Year’s Eve and two others had children in December. Shirley spends the winters in Florida and writes, “Hope all of you are healthy and happy.”

Elsie Knaus Klemt underwent emergency surgery for a clot in her leg and is slowly getting back to life as it was before, with the help of friends, family, and a trusty cane! She writes, “I wish I had something more exciting than health news to report, but at age 92 it can’t all be peachy!” She enjoyed seeing news from other ’53-ers in the fall issue of Leaves and hopes it will continue.

1954
Mary Atterbury Bradshaw spent a few days in August 2023 at Nancy Swanson Horsfield’s home after Nancy had visited Mary in March. The two Connecticut residents have been getting together for many years. Although they both lived in Carpenter House as students, they did not become close friends until they settled in the New York area after getting married. Writes Nancy, “I look forward to receiving news from Lasell and am so pleased that it has grown into such an amazing institution. I just wish that some of my 12 grandchildren had chosen Lasell, but there’s still hope with the great-grandchildren!”

1955
Bobbie Jennings is grateful to Bragdon buddies Joan Murano Swanson and Audrey Silver Rogers for continuing the tradition of letter-writing. Of course, at their tender ages of 88 and 89, most of the content includes updates on their medical conditions! But Joan and Audrey are dealing with additional challenges — both are faced with the heroic and stressful job of caring for their husbands. Bobbie continues to be active by chairing committees in her Hawaii retirement community, tending to the needs of the feral cats (who have learned where a soft-hearted sucker of a human lives), and walking the beaches and hillside.

1956
Judy Metcalf Daniels and Carol Corning Richard P’83 have stayed in touch since graduating from Lasell. They are both in their late 80s now and keep up with news about Lasell. Judy writes, “Are there any Chandler ’56 gals out there? We would love to be in touch.”

Ann Louise Tucker Lojzim is mourning the passing of two members of Conn House who died in the last year: Elaine Bertini Roske on August 5, 2023, and Lorraine Saunders on January 29. Louise reports that she and her husband, Jerry, are well. She is active in the UConn League as director of the Daytrippers group and enjoys mah-jongg.

1959
Carroll “Sam” Spelke Dawson has been widowed for nearly 30 years but has had a long-term boyfriend for more than 26 years. She has three daughters and seven grandchildren ranging in age from 16 to 31. She worked as a PR person for the arts and a program officer for a large foundation. In retirement, she wrote Broad Appeal: Wit and Wisdom from Women Ages 60 to 90. Carroll helped found a nonprofit organization, Impact Giving, which this year will grant more than $2 million to other nonprofits around the world, and hosts “Sam’s Salon,” a gathering of women to discuss topics that are fun and/or deep. She recently returned from Asia and is looking forward to more travel in the years to come. She writes, “That ain’t bad for a woman who just turned 84.”

1969
Mary Anne Conboy G’15 made a presentation at the Falmouth Genealogical Society during a session to assist members who were “stuck” in their genealogy research. Participants made suggestions to help find her family members in England and Ireland. The research was triggered by her October 2023 visit to St. Bede’s Church in Jarrow, England, where her great-grandparents were married and where her grandfather was baptized. In addition to learning about family members, Mary Anne became more acquainted with the history of the times. For instance, her great-grandparents’ marriage certificate from 1886 listed her great-grandmother as a “spinster.” The bride was 19 years old — the age of students at Lasell! How times have changed!

They met as nursing students at Lasell and lived together in an apartment on Beacon Hill while working as registered nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital. Colleen married Peter Balestrieri and they raised two daughters, Kimberly and Alyssa. Colleen was a proud and loving “MiMi” to four grandchildren.
