Remembering Katharina Decas '59
Katharina Decas was a pioneering advocate for girls’ and women’s sports who generously supported Lasell athletics, passed away on October 30, 2023. She was 84.
As a student, the lifelong resident of Wareham, Massachusetts, served as co-captain of the Lasell crew and volleyball teams and played basketball and softball.
After graduating from Lasell and earning her bachelor’s degree from Springfield College, she served as a physical education teacher at Sharon High School for 39 years. She established the school’s field hockey program and coached the girls’ basketball and softball teams.
She made a gift to establish the Katharina Decas ’59 Team Room for women athletes, which was dedicated during Family, Friends, and Alumni Weekend in October.
“Katharina was a trailblazer in an era before Title IX, when girls’ sports were not funded at the same level as boys’ teams,” Lasell President Eric Turner said at the dedication ceremony for the team room.
