Students Showcase Career Readiness at Symposium

December 06, 2024

Students and faculty members gathered on Tuesday, Dec. 4 for the Fall Career Readiness Symposium to showcase their work throughout the semester as part of the institution's commitment to preparing students for future careers.

This years’ theme, “Charting Your Course” contained nearly 20 presentations and about 20 displays throughout de Witt Hall, the Winslow Academic Center and the Brennan Library.

Each year, faculty, staff, sponsors, and students work with various Lasell departments, including facilities and IT to prepare their presentations representing the work they’ve completed in the classroom.

The day began with a mock trial from the students of the Foundation of the American Legal System course and a welcome message from President Eric M. Turner.

Throughout the day, students presented ideas from their courses and extracurricular activities that highlighted the symposium’s theme. The week wrapped up with a Winter Chorus Concert in the Yamawaki Auditorium on Thursday, Dec. 5, featuring performances from Lasell’s Chorus and Vocal Coaching students.

Symposium Project Coordinator Lee Means said that this year’s symposium had a “very strong turnout” and that it was exciting to see more courses presenting career-oriented themes.

“It is important to point out that presenting in itself is a career readiness activity,” Means said. “Everyone, at some point in their career will speak publicly, and I am glad we can provide an avenue to learn that skill.”

Dean of Curricular Integration and Director of the Rosemary B. Fuss Teaching and Learning Center, Dennis Frey said that Symposium is a critical component in showcasing Lasell’s work in building towards students’ futures, and that it demonstrates the institutions’ philosophy of Connected Learning.

“It’s always a joy to watch Lasell students shine brightly on the Symposium days,” Frey said. “They are the main attraction and absolutely the best representation of how Connected Learning produced career-ready, conscientious, and thoughtful young adults.”

Lasell’s next Symposium will take place in the spring, which will highlight the institutions’ efforts to fulfill the mission of the university to foster lifelong individual development, social responsibility, and professional growth.
