Lasell Students and Faculty Embark on Transformative Trip to Ireland
January 06, 2025
Lasell University students and faculty traveled to Ireland from November 24 to December 2 for an immersive experience that combined cultural exploration, academic enrichment, and hands-on participation in the Friendship Four NCAA Division I Hockey Tournament. The group also attended the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Conference, further emphasizing Lasell’s commitment to inclusive education.
The Universal Design for Learning approach aims to create inclusive learning environments for all, benefiting students with disabilities, those from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and learners who require additional challenges or support.
Lasell’s connection to the Friendship Four tournament dates back many years, rooted in a friendship between Assistant Professor of Athletic Training/Exercise Science Ron Laham and a former Belfast Giant player. This connection has since blossomed into a global educational initiative.
“I met him 25 years ago, and we’re still close friends,” said Laham. “This trip and its connections grew out of that relationship. I always tell students, you never know where a relationship will lead or what it can bring in 25–30 years.”
During their time in Ireland, students immersed themselves in Irish culture, exploring historic sites and gaining insights into the historical conflicts of Northern Ireland.
“My favorite part of the trip was getting the chance to truly experience the culture,” said Kaleigh Miller '25, a senior marketing major. “We explored historic sights, tried local food, talked with the locals, and ventured through the city. This trip is something I’ll never forget, and I highly recommend it to any student.”
The group attended four of the Friendship Four Hockey Tournament games and the “Per4mance” conference at W5, the Odyssey Trust’s Science and Discovery Center. During the event, they had the opportunity to hear athletes and health science professionals discuss key topics such as leadership, high performance, and overall health and wellbeing.
Beyond cultural exploration, the trip highlighted how sport and education can unite people. Dr. Cristina Haverty, Associate Vice President of Workforce Development and Global Engagement, shared the origins of the Friendship Four tournament.
“The Odyssey Trust first initiated the hockey tournament to foster peace and unity through sport and education,” Haverty said.
Since then, the Trust has expanded its mission, hosting the UDL Conference to strategize ways to make education more accessible.
Lasell’s relationship with the Odyssey Trust has grown stronger through this collaboration.
“We’re taking our brand to new audiences, and the response has been incredible,” Haverty said. “Our forward-thinking approach to UDL has made a significant impact.”
Graduate Education Chair Elizabeth Hartman and President Eric Turner represented Lasell as keynote speakers at the UDL Conference, highlighting the University’s pioneering work in Universal Design for Learning.
“There are many groups responsible for this conference, but the Odyssey Trust was instrumental in bringing the right people together,” Hartman said.
Their presentations not only underscored Lasell’s successes but also elevated the University’s reputation on a global scale.
“Professor Hartman and President Turner did a tremendous job,” Haverty said. “They showcased Lasell’s strengths and earned well-deserved recognition for our institution.”
This transformative trip reinforced Lasell’s dedication to connected learning and global engagement, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated.
