On Sunday, December 15th, members of the Lasell University community, including President Eric M. Turner and Provost Chrystal Porter, attended and participated in the annual “Living Legends” Gala to benefit the Museum of African American History (MAAH). The Living Legends Gala is an annual event celebrating trailblazers who have made significant contributions to history, culture, and education.

The evening celebrated the museum’s impactful work and highlighted Lasell’s growing partnership with the institution.

This year, the collaboration was brought to life through the talents of Lasell’s Fashion Department. Over the summer, Museum President Dr. Noelle Trent sought a custom gown for the gala and reached out to Lasell University to explore having a student involved in this process.

Dr. Trent was introduced to Professor Gail Jauregui, Chair of Lasell’s Fashion Design and Production program, who connected her with Hazel Nichol, a senior fashion design student.

Starting in August, Hazel and Dr. Trent worked closely together, holding several meetings and fittings. After months of dedicated effort and countless hours of work, Hazel presented Dr. Trent with the final dress on Thursday, December 12th—a stunning creation that was exactly what Dr. Trent had imagined.

Hazel’s work was just one part of Lasell’s strong presence at the gala. Three additional Lasell students showcased their talents - Bianca Branchini and Kayla Campbell, both fashion designers, displayed their original garments, while Lyric Miller participated as a model. All three, joined Dr. Trent on stage in a show-stopping program finale that brought the crowd to its feet.
