Master of Science in Sport Management
The curriculum for the four M.S. in Sport Management options is shown below. The degree program is structured as follows:
• 36 credits are required for the SMGT degree up to 6 may be waived based on prior academic work
~ 27 credits (9 courses) comprise the core offerings
~ 9 credits (3 courses) required for the concentration
Graduate and Professional Studies, in collaboration with the Sport Management Department, has established the following Goals and Outcomes for the Master's in Management degree. The program is structured to support students to achieve these goals and outcomes by the time they complete the program.
Goal 1: Professional Practice
Upon completion of the major program of study in Sport Management, students will be able to
1. Articulate and apply sport management principles and practices to everyday industry challenges
2. Demonstrate an understanding of sport operations management.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of sport governance
Goal 2: Intercultural Knowledge and Competency
Upon completion of the major program of study in Sport Management, students will be able to
1. Demonstrate an understanding of social, psychological and international foundations of the sport industry
2. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the complexity of culture, including its history, values, politics, beliefs and practices
3. Demonstrate the ability to ask complex questions that reflect an understanding of multiple cultural perspectives
Goal 3: Critical Thinking
Upon completion of the major program of study in Sport Management, students will be able to
1. State an issue/problem clearly and describe all relevant information necessary for full understanding
2. Systematically analyze their own and others assumptions and evaluate the relevant perspectives when presenting a position
3. Demonstrate through their analysis an understanding of the complexities of a particular issue.
4. Suggest a logical conclusion reflecting their informed evaluation of the evidence and multiple perspectives on a particular issue
Goal 4: Inquiry & Research: Practice-focused research
Upon completion of the major program of study in Sport Management, students will be able to
1. Effectively define the scope of their research focus
2. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of effective, well-designed search strategies
3. Organize and synthesize information from sources to support their research question or purpose with clarity and depth
4. Correctly use research writing strategies, including citing references, summarizing, paraphrasing, distinguishing between common knowledge and ideas requiring citation
Goal 5: Leadership
Upon completion of the major program of study in Sport Management, students will be able to
1. Demonstrate an understanding of leadership theories and practices as related to the sport industry
2. Articulate and apply strategic planning principles for sport organizations
3. Articulate and apply change management theories to sport organizations
4. Demonstrate an understanding how to manage and motivate teams and individuals within a sport organization
5. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical decision-making in the sport industry
Goal 6: Communication
Upon completion of the core requirements of study in Sport Management, students will be able to
1. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of context, audience and purpose
2. Use appropriate and compelling content to illustrate mastery of the subject
3. Use high quality and relevant sources to support their ideas
4. Demonstrate clarity and fluency in their writing, which is virtually error-free
