A Lasell Family Legacy
Elliot Pototsky ’25 applied to Lasell with the goal of exploring collegiate athletics and sport communication. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that he learned of a family history at the institution—both his great-grandmother, Charlotte Weitzman Rogers ’36, and grandmother, Roberta Rogers Shore ’66, were graduates of Lasell Junior College for Women.
“It was a surprise,” he says. He often thinks about both his grandparents walking the same campus he does today (his grandfather, a Harvard student, frequently visited Roberta at Lasell while they were dating).
Both Elliot and Roberta lived in Woodland Hall in their first year at Lasell and spent their sophomore year in Victorian houses—Gardner for Elliot, and Hawthorne for Roberta. For her mother, Charlotte, activities included the golf club and riding club. Roberta enjoyed bowling and softball and frequently took the T from Riverside to Boston, being sure to catch the last train that would get her back to campus before curfew.
Things were much stricter in her day, she says. “You couldn’t wear slacks unless there was a certain amount of snow on the ground, and men were only allowed as far as the living room. But back then, that wasn’t considered old-fashioned. That was just the times.”
“There has definitely been substantial change,” says Elliot, who enjoys the freedom of roaming campus at any hour as he navigates his roles as promotions director for WLAS, digital sports editor for The 1851 Chronicle, Blue Key Society ambassador, orientation leader, peer mentor, and head of campus sports broadcasting at varsity team games.
“Back then our only role was to be a student,” says Roberta, comparing her extracurricular list to that of her grandson. “The world has changed a lot.”
